Welcome to The Conntrarian, Connecticut College’s student-led, opinion-based publication and a member of the Collegiate Network. We created this publication with the idea that the free and open spread of ideas is one of the most important aspects of a functioning democracy in mind. This publication aims to serve as a broad-ranging platform full of important discussion that reflects different perspectives to provide a healthy ecosystem of differing viewpoints. The varying perspectives presented in this publication are that of the writer and do not reflect the views or opinions of The Conntrarian, Connecticut College, or the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.

Publications that value freedom of expression and the non-selective sharing of opinions and viewpoints are central to any democracy. Whether it’s the government shaping laws for our country or Connecticut College making policies to better foster our liberal arts values, all students play a role in contributing to these democratic processes. Afterall, democracy is simply the discussion and dissection of conversing solutions. When we are exposed to a greater number of ideas, we become more productive members of democracy by having more information at our disposal.

As we have seen a worrying amount of objections to the expression of opposing viewpoints, by creating a forum to openly discuss and exchange opinions of all types we hope to diminish the bedrock of tribalism. It is our goal that not only will we provide a platform where writers can express their opinions freely but also educate readers on a wide range of subjects and perspectives that will expand knowledge and curb division.
