In contrast, acceptance is an affirmation, not an act of self-restraint. Tolerance should not be mistaken for an aspirational virtue -- rather, it is the absolute minimum a civilized nation should (irony intended) tolerate.
Yeah, I would agree that tolerance and acceptance have distinct definitions. Although, I used them in a broader sense to encompass the YouGov poll's categories of "acceptable" responses. When respondents selected "acceptable," I interpreted it as indicating both tolerance and acceptance. That being said, you certainly raise a good point in describing why tolerance and acceptance are not perfect synonyms.
